Today’s excerpt is on the 4-4 Defense .
The 44 Defense is the second most popular defense played against The Triple Gun Offense. There are a lot of similarities between the 43 and the 44. Both defenses use 4 linemen and they cover both guards. Usually, with a 1 technique to one side and a 3 technique to the other side. But there are some significant things that the 44 Defense does that must be prepared for.
The Secondary is a 3 Shell which is very vulnerable against the Vertical Game and the Quick Game. The Free Safety is going to try to be the 9th run defender by running the Alley. We are going to block that FS with an unbalanced receiver. We’re also going to burn Free Safety with Play Action.
You always must be prepared for the Defense to put 8 between the Slots and pack the front. The Rule is “8 Between the Slots, throw quicks and hots”. We can also use “Max Protection and go to war with our Wide Receivers on their Cornerbacks 1 on 1.
You must get outside on the perimeter so Double Options are a must. “Put Speed in Space and let the big guys chase” Take away the legs of those Defensive Tackles. Never let the defense dictate just give reads because the
44 will make your Quarterback give all day so the ball is going into the strength of the defense.
It all starts with The Gun Triple. Like every game plan, this one starts with the Gun Triple. There are some slight tweaks to the Gun Triple that are built-into the play – The Flash Pass & The Slot Seal on the Playside OLB.
