This is an excerpt from my book “Tony DeMeo’s Triple Gun Offense: An Evolution of Option Football”. It’s about our Philosophy on Formations. Joe Restic the former great Harvard Coach had a big influence on using Unbalanced formations.
One of the major updates in The Triple Gun Offense is the expansion of our use of formations and motions. We not only increased the number of formations, we also kept the same personnel in the game to get into the formation. This limited defensive substitution and created mismatches. Moving the Tailback position into multiple spots made it very difficult for the Defense to keep the ball out of his hands.
We also added “Compressed Sets” to create special flanks and to Crack Block the Pitch Key, forcing the Corner to play pitch. (Make Cover Guys Tackle and Tackle Guys Cover).
Exotic Unbalanced Formations that were great in the Multi-Bone became another key weapon in the Triple Gun menu. We put both Split Ends to the same side and shifted to create a recognition and numbers problem for the Defense. We used the same Exotic sets as under center but now in the Gun.
Using motion (Whirley) to create misdirection was another important development and evolution of the Triple Gun Offense. We also added “Jet” and “Tail” motion to run the sweep. The Jet Sweep Series was an outstanding complement to our option attack.
Shifts. The main use of shifts was in our “Exotic” package that we used in the Multi-Bone. With three wide outs, trips could be used as a pre-shift set. In that scenario, if we called twins, we would then shift to twins. Another way to shift is to call “shift open.” In this method, we would align in any set other than the set called in that personnel group, and then shift to it
Motions. Another change in the Triple Gun Offense, is that unless motion is called the pitch back goes on the snap with no motion. Without motion the Defense can’t get any tip on the direction of the play. We call Jump to get a “head start” or to create a counter situation. Using “Whirley Motion” is a great way to get a Counter Option look as is “Flip” Motion. Other possible motions calls include the following:
- “Jump” to motion the slot
- “Flip” to motion the Slot to be in position to be the Dive Back
- “Whirley” to motion the playside slot in 3 step motion and return in the same side to be a lead blocker
- Jet Motion to run the Jet Series.
This is a small sampling of the numerous looks we run our base Triple Gun from without any new teaching.
