Advice from a Dream Team Coach: Chuck Daly
Chuck Daly was the Coach of the 1992 Team that swept through the 1992 Olympics in grand style. Chuck Daly was a man of style, the way he dressed, the way he walked. Everything ne did had style.
In 1994, I received the Mercyhurst Lifetime Achievement Award for my contribution to Mercyhurst College ( now University). The presenter was Chuck Daly. We met in the afternoon & spent the day together before the banquet. We discussed coaching and why the Pistons won 2 NBA titles.
He emphasized a team will play hard only if it practices hard. So Practice is important. He told me no one practiced harder than Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson & Larry Byrd. When your stars practice hard the team follows.
- Practice MUST establish game habits so they become instinctive
- Establish a team identify- The Pistons we’re the “Bad Boys” – the played rough, tough basketball
- Your Star Player may not be your Best Player. Isaiah Thomas may have been the star but Joe Dumars was his best player.
- Have role players that know their roles. Vinnie Johnson and Adrian Dantley were designated scorers.
- Rodman was a rebounder & defender & so on.
- Never let a mistake go uncorrected – DAILY DISCIPLINE must be established for daily improvement.
This video is from Chuck Daly’s induction into The Basketball Hall of Fame. It’s pure style
