Just add water and stir – Web sites for the rest of us

Coaches who want to build a web site have a number of choices – including some fairly simple “Site Builder” utilities and free web hosting. And there’s always the computer guy in school or even the kids these days. Either way, though, building a web site usually requires a lot of work in planning and maintenance and there’s nothing worse than an obviously out-of-date site or one filled with bad links and Under Construction signs.

A great way to build a site came to this writer’s attention while searching for football coaching web sites, when the search engine displayed a site called The Split Back Veer Offense. Immediately upon reaching the site, it was evident that the site was a “blog” – or, at least it was built with Blog software known as Blogger, which is owned by Google, is free and very easy to use.

Looking through the Split Back Veer site, it was clear that there was no easier way for a coach to build an information site..at least, at the time. Blogger is very easy to use and its possible to get something up and running quickly, adding pictures, links, etc as the “blogger”‘s comfort level and skill grow.

Blogs are a lot like modern versions of the personal web pages that were so popular when the web was young, with additional tools like RSS “feeds” that make them search engine-friendly. They are also a great fit for coaches who want to create a site quickly, easily and affordably.

For coaches who are considering creating a web site, check out Steve Smith’s Veer Site at http://veersite.blogspot.com. Steve has some great articles, a bunch of drawings and some personal thoughts that make his Blog look and feel like it was built by a professional (and expensive) web designer.

And oh yeah – when you publish your site, submit it to www.footballcoachingsites.com – our search directory of football coaching web sites, football camps, and football clinics.  We’ll visit and check it out, and consider writing about it.
