Sun Tzu’s 5 Principles on The Art of War

A question I’ve been asked many times is  “Who was your biggest source of strategy?” I’ve discussed my mentors many times here and in my book Tony DeMeo’s Triple Gun Offense: An Evolution of Option Football.

But the idea of Strategic Flexibility had its seeds in the Sun Tzu classic “The Art of War”, which I’ve read a half a dozen times.

Some of the principles of Sun Tzu can be summarized in these 5 Key Points from The Art of War:

1. Know Yourself and Know Your Enemy The most famous principle in the book. Sun Tzu argued that if you know both yourself and your enemy, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. Self-awareness and intelligence about your opponent are the foundations of any successful strategy.

2. Deception and Adaptability are Central to Victory Sun Tzu taught that all warfare is based on deception — appearing weak when strong, inactive when active. The ability to adapt to changing circumstances and mislead your opponent is more powerful than brute force alone.

3. Win Without Fighting The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting. Sun Tzu valued strategic positioning, diplomacy, and psychological pressure so overwhelming that the enemy surrenders before a battle even begins. Victory through minimal conflict is the highest achievement.

4. Strategic Positioning and Terrain Choosing the right ground — physically, politically, or competitively — is decisive. Sun Tzu emphasized using the environment to your advantage, controlling key positions, and never fighting from a position of weakness when it can be avoided.

5. Leadership, Discipline, and Morale A great general must be wise, trustworthy, benevolent, courageous, and strict. An army that is well-led, disciplined, and morally motivated will consistently outperform a larger but poorly managed force. The character and skill of leadership determines the outcome.

“A formless attack is best, one that adapts to the battle”
